As a result of the project ‘Foster Innovation and Public Benefit of the Union of Tbilisi Museums,’ funded by BP, the scientific and technical infrastructure of the Restoration and Conservation Laboratory at the Tbilisi Museums Association underwent significant updates. The project was conducted in collaboration with the Consultation and Training Center (CTC) and the Union of Tbilisi Museums.
On November 15, 2023, a presentation showcasing the enhanced capabilities and one-year work results of the Restoration and Conservation Scientific Research Laboratory was held at the Ilia Chavchavadze Literary-Memorial Museum in Tbilisi.
Thanks to financial support from BP, the laboratory is now equipped with state-of-the-art tools and equipment essential for restoration and conservation work. The renovated laboratory is capable of conducting restoration-conservation work on handwritten documents, unique books, photo and iconographic collections, paintings, samples made on light-sensitive materials, and other museum artifacts, using the latest methods and modern materials. It is noteworthy that all technical equipment adheres to international standards, ensuring the protection of exhibits and extending their shelf life.
The event commenced with opening remarks by Nini Sanadiradze, the General Director of the Union of Tbilisi Museums, followed by a welcome speech from Irina Khantadze, the Executive Director of the Consultation and Training Center (CTC). Laboratory restorers Tamar Dvalishvili and Lela Gotsiridze then presented the features of the laboratory to the invited guests and provided information about the restoration and conservation processes to the interested public.
The event drew the participation of representatives from Tbilisi Municipality City Hall, Tbilisi City Council, Consultation and Training Center (CTC), and other invited guests.
The project aims to support the Union of Tbilisi Museums in better achieving its mission as a “socially engaged” cultural institution. It introduces innovations to enhance outreach to wider and diverse audiences, upgrade its services, and ensure sound stewardship for its collection of exhibits.
