The International Museum Day 2023 week opens on May 18th, featuring a diversity of events, educational programs, and activities across Tbilisi Museums Union venues. From May 18th to 25th, the Union invites visitors to engage in discussions, interactive lessons, and various events scheduled at different museum spaces within the union.
International Museum Day was inaugurated on May 18, 1977, by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) and has since been commemorated by the global museum community for over 40 years. ICOM stands as a distinctive network comprising over 35,000 individual members, 20,000 museums, and 172 local and international committees, serving as a vibrant hub for museum professionals worldwide.
The ICOM Advisory Board curates a theme annually for International Museum Day. In 2023, the theme is “Museums – Sustainable Development and Prosperity.” Tbilisi Museums Union aligns with this theme, crafting educational programs tailored for the week. Offerings include specialized programs like “Ecosystem and Biodiversity,” “Earth: Our Home,” “Man for Nature,” and various other initiatives responding to ICOM’s yearly theme.
