Restoring “Thursdays” Tradition
Ilia Chavchavadze transformed Elisabeth Saginashvili’s house into a significant cultural center at the end of the 19th century, incorporating a public purpose. It became a pivotal gathering place for progressive-minded Georgian public figures, laying the groundwork for the country’s important national, state, and cultural initiatives. The established format for these gatherings was the traditional “Thursdays,” hosting eminent figures from Georgian society. They engaged in discussions encompassing the nation’s advancement, the country’s future, significant epochal occurrences, and matters of state importance.
The Ilia Chavchavadze Literary Memorial Museum is starting to restore the tradition of “Thursdays,” reinstating the format of public lectures reminiscent of those held in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These lectures focus on the accomplishments of Ilia Chavchavadze, his contemporaries, and pivotal events of historical significance.
