The Tbilisi Museums Union – Kote and Soso Tsereteli Memorial House Museum hosted a lecture on the theme “Airplane Boys: A Glimpse into an Era” on February 26, 2018 at the “Ligamusi” book house.

“Airplane Boys: A Glimpse into an Era” continues the commemoration initiated on November 18 and honors the memory of Soso Tsereteli. He was one of the seven young people attempting to flee Soviet Georgia by plane on that day in 1983. The Soviet regime imposed harsh penalties on all involved in the hijack attempt. Soso Tsereteli suffered a throat wound and tragically succumbed to bleeding, denied medical aid by authorities. The location of his grave was unknown for a long time. Gia Tabidze died on the plane. Dato Mikaberidze took his own life at Tbilisi airport. The Iverian brothers, Gega Kobakhidze, and his father Theodore (who wasn’t even on the plane) faced execution. Tina Fetviashvili received a 14-year prison sentence. Tragically, seven people lost their lives at the airport on that day.

March 1 is Soso Tsereteli’s birthday. During the lecture, guests Levan Berdzenishvili and Lasha Bugadze discussed the impact of the Red regime’s verdict and emphasized the significance of freedom.
