As a part of Ilia’s Thursday, public lecture “Challenges in Adapting Georgian Church Hymns to Musical Notation and Traditional Georgian Music”, in cooperation with “Tbilisi Baroque Festival”, was conducted by Malkhaz Erkvanidze, Doctor of Social Sciences.
Within the framework of the public meeting, the speaker discussed the history of transferring Georgian church hymns to notes and the importance of the Georgian musical system.
It’s noteworthy that the planned meeting within the mentioned museum holds historical significance. In 1891, this very house served as the site for the establishment of the first printing house, enabling the use of notation systems for printing. It was also home to the reading and singing room initiated by “Maksim Sharadze and Amkhanagoba,” which persisted, and where Filimon Koridze instructed in Georgian singing and chanting.
Malkhaz Erkvanidze holds teaching positions in Georgian folk musical creativity at both the Tbilisi State Conservatory and the Tbilisi Theological Academy and Seminary. Additionally, he serves as the head of a workshop at the Higher School of Georgian Church Chants and Folk Songs and is the founder and conductor of the Anchiskhati Cathedral choir.
