27 - Commencing Restoration and Strengthening of Ilia Chavchavadze House Museum in 2022

At the Ilia Chavchavadze House Museum (N22 Giorgi Chubinashvili Street), preliminary efforts for the research, geological surveys, and restoration project have been underway since 2021. Starting in spring 2022, the house museum will commence its rehabilitation, strengthening, and restoration works.

Ilia Chavchavadze House Museum was established based on the resolution of the Council of Ministers of Georgia on August 3, 1956, and was opened on October 22, 1957.

Giorgi Leonidze, among other prominent figures, initiated the creation of the museum in Tbilisi. In the early 1900s, Ilia Chavachavadze acquired a yard and a modest single-story house on Andreev Street, now known as Giorgi Chubinashvili Street, from Gabriel and Barbara Ghviniashvili. This property, previously used for storage by its former owner, consisted of small rooms.

Later,  Ilia Chavchavadze employed the design by renowned 19th-century architect Simon Kldiashvili to add two rooms with an entrance facade to the house. One room was transformed into a workspace, while the other became a guestroom. Jacob Frangishvili, a builder-engineer, oversaw the construction of the house.

The house museum contains various artifacts linked to Ilia Chavchavadze’s life and achievements: memorabilia, personal archives, diverse editions of his writings, and literature dedicated to his legacy, including scientific works, monographs, articles, essays, along with documentary photographs, fine art pieces, and more.
